The Transitional Kitchen: Blending the Best of Both Worlds
As a design-build contractor, Creative Nook, Inc. has helped many homeowners understand that the kitchen design style they’re looking for is called a “transitional” kitchen. Transitional kitchens are a unique blend of traditional and modern styling. Many homeowners along the Main Line find this kitchen remodeling style to be the perfect way to balance modern decor in their traditional homes.
Essential Transitional Design Elements
Because a transitional kitchen is really a blend of two distinct styles, the design rules aren’t well-defined. There are some key design elements you’ll want to keep in mind but you don’t necessarily need to incorporate all of them for a successful transitional kitchen remodeling project.
- Minimalistic wall decor – Your backsplash should be simple and neutral in color, with clean lines. Adding pictures, plates or other things to the walls as decoration will detract from the clean look.
- Simple countertops – Although granite is still a popular choice for countertops, be careful when choosing the pattern. The consistent pattern of quartz or the muted tones of marble are better choices for a transitional kitchen.
- Plain cabinetry – Flat-front and shaker-style cabinets with simple crown molding are best for this style. Clean lines are key, so avoid cabinets with dimension and curved inlays.
- Neutral colors – It’s completely acceptable to combine several neutral colors to create a color palette, but you’ll find a lot of black, white, off-white and grey transitional kitchens.
